An Anniversary

2024-04-20

I received an email:

Greetings Rev. Gary Steven Jordan,
Here’s a milestone worth celebrating: it’s now been 14 years since you officially became an ordained minister! As we raise a virtual glass to this exciting occasion, we just wanted to reach out and see how things are going. Have you been able to take full advantage of your status as a legally ordained minister?

No, I have not taken advantage. I have performed no weddings, funerals, handfastings, nor baptisms. I have no flock to whom I might minister. I own no tax-free church property. When I was ordained, I thought it mostly a joke... mostly.

The Universal Life Church (Monastery) says

Our fundamental tasks are to promote freedom of religion and to "do that which is right" - core tenets that underscore everything we do. The ULC appeals to a worldwide audience through our online church services and our overarching belief that "we are all children of the same universe."

Since their core beliefs and mine align, I am happy to be a legally ordained minister of the ULC. Someday, I plan to preside over my funeral.
