An annoying lack of basement lighting in the laundry corner led to multiple solutions. Initially, there was a remote On/Off switch at the top of the basement stairs that controlled the screw-in fixture over the deep sinks. The fixture itself is powered from a light switch by the outside door. Another switch controls the overhead in the garden room/shop. I have, over the last year, added lights to improve the ambiance.
If, for any reason, someone turned off the laundry light, it seemed that nobody would use the switch at the top of the stairs to turn it back on. The local switch could turn it off and needed to be "On" for it to be remotely controlled, but my lazy kinder (they take after me) would just use the plant lights from the next room to see what they were doing. This solution was less than satisfactory to me.
At the same time, the stairs to the basement were not lighted. My solution involved battery operated lights with motion sensors. Of course, these lights were rechargeable - but recharging is inconvenient.
I am not an electrician, but it was simple enough. Install the plugs in the electric box to make it semi-waterproof. Install a cable gland. Pass the power cord into the box. Strip and attach the wires, Black-to-Brass, White-to-Silver, Ground-to-Green. Tighten the gland nut to seal the cord in the box. Attach the lamp base to the box. Lay out the power cord from outlet to where the box would be mounted, using cable ties to keep the cord out of the way. Mount the box to the overhead, in this case, adjacent to the stairs. Finally, screw in the remote device and a bulb.
The new light's remote is controlled from the switch at the top of the stairs. It illuminates the stairs and some of the laundry. At the very least, it shines where one can find the switches for the other lights.
